The LED-backlit panel makes for a bright and crisp display. It's somewhat surprising to find this technology in a monitor with the relatively low retail price of $299.

Without the stand, the monitor measures 21.7" x 13" x 2.8" and weighs 10.8 lb. With the stand, it measures 21.7" x 14.9" x 8.7" and weighs 16.3 lb.

Sporting a 23" panel that has a dot pitch of 0.265 mm, a brightness of 270 cd/m2, a 1,000:1 contrast range (25,000:1 dynamic), and a viewable angle of 178-degrees both horizontally and vertically, the MultiSync Ea232WMi offers a 24-bit color display at screen resolutions as high as 1920 x 1080 at 60 Hz. Display panel response time, a moderate 14 ms, is adequate for most applications but is on the slow side for film editing or complex model rotation.

Refresh rates for the display are 31.5–83 KHz (analog/digital) and 56–75 Hz (analog/digital). The MultiSync Ea232WMi consumes a maximum of 37 W of power, and a minimum of 21 W when in ECO mode (default). Display brightness adjusts automatically via an ambient sensor, and accuColor color control offers digital smoothing and digital controls. NaViSet monitor control software is included.
The stand makes it easy to adjust the monitor to the desired position, including tilt, swivel, and rotate functions as well as height adjustment that offers 110 mm of lift. a 100 x 100 VESa connector on the panel allows for either wall or extension-arm mounting of the display, and cable management helps to keep all attached power and display cables tidy.

Control buttons on the bottom-right corner of the bezel include a Menu button, a navigation toggle that works in four directions, a Select button, a Reset/ECO Mode button, and a power on/off toggle. among the settings is a 6-preset DV Mode: Standard, Text, Photo, Game, Movie, and Dynamic.

Display Results

I used DisplayMate Multimedia Edition USB to evaluate the display while running Windows 7 x64 with SP1 installed. DisplayMate USB does not currently support 64-bit systems, but I used the procedure found at www.displaymate.com/xp_mode.html to run it in XP Mode. The MultiSync Ea232WMi display sailed through the individual benchmarks. Colors were clean and pure, with only the green being slightly over-amped.

all told, the NEC has a very pleasing display and produces text that is easy to read. Only at extreme viewing angles did I encounter a slight purple tinge to the display.

Connections include a DisplayPort, DVI-D, 15-pin D-sub, audio input, a headphone jack on the side of the panel, and four USB 2x ports: two on the bottom of the panel and two on one side. Two downward-pointing 2-W speakers are built into the unit and are useful for video conferencing, although their sound quality isn't suitable for more demanding purposes.

Included with the NEC MultiSync Ea232WMi monitor and stand are a power cord, cable cover, two video signal cables (15-pin mini D-sub male to 15-pin mini D-sub male and DVI-D to DVI-D), USB and audio cables, and a printed setup manual. a setup manual is available on the NEC web site at www.necdisplay.com/p/ea232wmi-bk under the Downloads tab.
